Ketogenic diet

What is a ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet, also known as the "very low carb diet" or "very low carb diet", involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake in favor of fat to induce a state of ketosis.

In lack of carbohydrates, the body will draw on fatty acids to supply itself with energy, melting our lipid reserves in the process. We eat fat to burn fat.

This state of "ketosis" causes a marked decrease in appetite, which contributes to reducing the amount of food consumed.

The ketogenic diet consists of consuming:
70% lipids (fats)
20% protein
5% carbohydrates and 5% vegetables

What is a state of ketosis?

Simply put, it's a state where the body has replaced its primary fuel, glucose, with lipids, using ketone bodies generated by the liver. To be in a state of nutritional ketosis, the body must have exhausted its stores of glucose.
